ZMT DAAD Doctoral Scholarship 2021/2022 is currently receiving applications from interested applicants. Two doctoral scholarships are being advised by the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) and the scholarship will begin by Fall 2021. Starting in 2022, two doctoral scholarships can also be granted in addition to the above.

The scholarships to be granted are in relation to the interdisciplinary research topic “Adaptation of marine socio-ecological systems to changing environments”. Several global, regional, and environmental changes affect the ecosystems along the densely populated coasts of the tropical belt. Through different, mutually complementary approaches, the possibilities and consequences of the adaptation of biological and social systems to these changes will be investigated. Encouragement is given to different disciplinary approaches and interdisciplinary cooperation to be a part of the open topic.

Scholarship

The benefits of the scholarship include the following:

  • A current scholarship installment of €1,200 per month
  • Travel allowance
  • Health, accident, and personal liability insurance payments to be covered
  • Current research allowance of € 460 per year.
  • in summer 2021, a preparatory intensive German language course
  • Grant holders may be given monthly allowance for accompanying family members under certain circumstances (about €200 child allowance per child and about €275 marriage allowance)
  • If research stays abroad take no longer than 25% of the scholarship period, then research stays are possible.

Eligibility

Interested persons are expected to meet certain requirements that will decide their eligibility. The following are the eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants are expected to be origins of Sub-Sahara Africa
  • Applicants must hold a university degree (it is required that international degrees are equivalent to German “Diplom”, “Magister”, or “Master”
  • The applicant’s final examination be it Masters degree or its equivalent should not be longer than six years ago.
  • Applicants must not have resided in Germany for more than 15 months at the time the nomination letter gets to DAAD (March 2021).
  • Females are encouraged to apply for these positions as it is the aim of ZMT to increase the proportion of women in research.

The application information required of you consists of:

  • Your personal details
  • CV with a maximum of 2 pages
  • As related to the above-mentioned topic, the concept of your Doctoral project. (max 2 pages). The ZMT workshop leader has to discuss and approve the concept before you can submit it. To contact the ZMT workshop leader beforehand, click on this link .
  • Support letter from ZMT workgroup leader
  • Reference letter from two referees in accordance with this template 
  • A motivation letter from you on why you would like to pursue a doctoral project at ZMT and why you believe the suggested working groups could fit your interests. The letter should not be more than one page.
  • Master and Bachelor degree certificates.

Potential candidates after the pre-selection process based on the written application will be given the opportunity to submit a 5-10-page project proposal. They are to make a presentation of their project to a ZMT committee via a video interview.

ZMT will nominate selected candidates to the DAAD for the scholarship. Nominated candidates are required to submit a formal DAAD application.
