M.Sc, MD, PhD PROGRAMMES IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Infectious Diseases/Vaccinology and Molecular Medicine

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN MOLECULAR MEDICINE

Entry requirements for the M.Sc Molecular Medicine:

  • Candidates are expected to meet the university minimum requirements as stipulated by the programmes of the University and the University.
  • Candidates that are with MB.BS from a university that is recognized
  • Candidates are expected to have passed the Part 1 fellowship examination or its equivalents from a postgraduate medical college that is recognized.

Entry requirements for the PhD Molecular Medicine:

  • Candidates are required to meet the university minimum requirements as stipulated by the programmes of the University and the University.
  • Candidates with MB.BS from a university that is recognized
  • Candidates are expected to have passed the Part 2 fellowship examination in relevant discipline or its equivalents from postgraduate medical colleges that is recognized or Graduates from an approved university that have obtained the degree of M.Sc in Molecular Medicine with a minimum CGPA of 3.0/4 or 3.5/5.0 or 60% and project score not less than 60%.

  • Candidates are required to meet the university minimum requirements as stipulated by the programmes of the University and the University.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN INFECTIOUS DISEASES & VACCINOLOGY

Entry requirements for the M.Sc Infectious Diseases & Vaccinology:

  • Candidates are expected to meet the university minimum requirements as stipulated by the University programmes and the University.

UNN Postgraduate Admission General Entry Requirements

All interested candidates that are for the admission into Postgraduate programme of the university are required to be in possession of:

  • 5 credits acquired at maximum of two sittings in WASC or GCE or NECO or NABTEB including English Language.
  • Candidates are expected to be in possession of the minimum entry requirements for admission into the first degree and postgraduate programmes in their areas of interest for the postgraduate studies.
  • The Candidates are expected to be graduates of the University of Nigeria or other Universities in Nigeria that possesses the qualifications above.
  • For the PGD in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture, candidates with University degrees in relevant areas are the only ones eligible to apply.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

Candidates with the following may qualify for the Postgraduate Diploma admission.

  • All who are Graduates of the University of Nigeria or other Universities that is recognized, and have acquired a degree of bachelor with the minimum of at least a third class honours with at least 2.0 GPA on a 5-point scale. For Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration, candidates with at least third class honours degree with at least 2.0 on a 5-point scale in Arts, the Social Sciences, Law, Business Administration or Education. Candidates that are from disciplines that is not stated above should in addition be in possession of at least three years cognate post-qualification experience in administrative/managerial positions. For PGD in Business Administration, the 3rd Class Honours is expected to be from Business Administration.
  • All Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) with a 3.50 Grade Point Average on a five-point scale or its equivalent stand a chance to get admitted. For Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration, candidates that are in possession of other professional qualifications that includes Associate Institute of Bankers, Associate Certified Chartered Accountants, Associate Cost and Management Accountants, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Chartered Professional Accountants, Associate Chartered Institute of Accountants, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria etc. are in possession of an added advantage for admission. Candidates with professional qualifications, which includes HND, are expected to have obtained pre-professional qualifications, which includes 5 credits in WASC or GCE O/L or NECO in other to meet the basic University entry requirement, for admission for degree courses in their respective departments.
  • In addition to what was stated in (i) or (ii) above, in special cases, candidates may receive the admission after passing such tests as may be prescribed by the Department/Faculty.
  • All Candidates that who hold other qualifications considered equivalent to the above and acceptable to the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Senate of the University may stand a chance to receive the admission.

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE

Entry Requirements: Nutrition and Dietetics (PGD)

Programmes that are in Nutrition and dietetics, candidates are expected to be in possession of the following qualifications from a recognized institution:

  • HND in Nutrition and Dietetics with at least a minimum of Upper Credit or Third Class Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics with at least 2.0 GPA on 5-point scale.
  • Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics: Candidates that are looking forward to admission into M.Sc in Nutrition and Dietectics are expected to have acquired the following:
  1. HND (Upper Credit) in Nutrition and/or Dietetics with PGD (Credit level and above) in Human Nutrition and/or Dietetics.
  2. Bachelor’s degree with at least 2nd Class Honours (Lower Division) in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  3. Bachelor’s degree in related disciplines with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) and PGD in Nutrition and Dietetics at credit level and above in addition to meeting the requirement of the matriculation requirements.
  • D or M.Sc/Ph.D: Candidates looking forward to admission for Ph.D degree programme or M.Sc/Ph.D programme in Human Nutrition and Dietetics are expected to be in possession of any of the following qualifications from an institution that is recognized:
  1. Master’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics with at least a GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale.

Department of Home Science

  • PGD: Candidates looking forward to admission for PGD in Home Science are expected to be in possession of any of the following qualifications from recognized institution:
  1. HND in Home Science or Home Economics or in relevant fields with a minimum of Upper Credit, or Third-class Bachelor’s degree in Home Science or Home Economics with at least 2.0 GPA on 5-point scale.
  • Sc: Candidates looking forward to admission into the Master of Science programme in Home Science are expected to be in possession of the following qualifications from a recognized institution
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Home Science or related discipline with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division).
  2. Bachelor’s degree in Home Science or related discipline with 3rd class honours degree plus PGD passed at Upper Credit level and above.
  3. HND Upper Credit in Home Science or related disciplines plus PGD at Credit level in the same area in addition to satisfying University matriculation requirements.
  • D or M.Sc/Ph.D: Candidates looking forward to admission into Ph.D or M.Sc/Ph.D programme in Home Science are expected to have Master’s Degree in Home Science/Home Economics or related discipline from recognized Institution with at least 3.50 GPA on a 5-point scale.

MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME

The following shall qualify for Master’s Degree admission:

  • Graduates from the University of Nigeria or of other universities that are recognized and have acquired the Bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines with at least a second class honours with not less than 2.50 GPA;
  • Candidates in possession of a relevant Postgraduate Diplomas from the University of Nigeria or any other university that is recognized with a minimum of at least credit level passes with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or 3.0 on a 4-point scale;
  • Candidates that their first degree is unclassified but possess have an average score of 50% or above;
  • For M.Ed. degree programmes, candidates in possession of a good second class single honours degree in teaching subjects and a merit level pass at Postgraduate Diploma in Education, or those who are in possession of a third-class honours degree in teaching subjects plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education passed at credit level or above;
  • For MPA degree programme, candidates should, in addition to (i) and (ii) above, be serving administrative/managerial staff in the Public or Private sector with minimum of at least two years post-qualification cognate experience;
  • All the Holders of professional Fellowship qualifications which includes a FIMLT, FNILT, NIPR, or their equivalents acquired via examination. However, candidates with the professional certificates listed above are expected to have worked as Senior Technologist(s) or in equivalent position(s) for a minimum of three years;
  • For MD degree Programme in the Department of Medicine: Must have the Fellowship in Medicine from the National Postgraduate Medical College or its equivalent, or At least an M.Sc. degree in the relevant discipline in which research work predominates, from an institution that is recognized after obtaining the MBBS or its equivalent. The Master’s degree is expected be with a GPA of at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale in the relevant medical science.
  • For M.Sc. degree programme in the Department of Medicine all the applicant are expected to hold a degree in Medicine (MBBS, MBBCh) from the University of Nigeria or any other university that is recognised.
  • For MPH degree programme, candidates are expected to in addition to (i) above, possess at least three years relevant post qualification experience or a minimum of a Second Class Honours degree in Nursing Sciences, Sociology and Social Work, Psychology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Health Education, Pharmacy, DVM, MBBS and BDS. For the MPH Degree Programme, the Department would commence the screening of the candidates further and base their recommendation on the result of the screening.
  • Candidates in possession of qualifications other than those listed above, and are acceptable to the Senate of the University of Nigeria.

Doctorate Degree (Ph.D.) Programme

All candidates that are from the university or from other recognized universities and have acquired the Master’s degree appropriate for the areas of study proposed will stand a chance to qualify for the doctorate admission. Specifically.

  • In possession of a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale, GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale for admission into a PhD programme in all Departments aside the departments that are listed in C(ii) below:
  • minimum GPA of 4.0 on a 5-point scale is needed for the admission into PhD programmes in the following Departments/Faculties: Music, Economics, Public Administration and Local Government, Psychology and Faculties of Education, Medical Sciences, Health Sciences and Technology and Business Administration.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or a B (60%) average at Master’s degree average as long as that satisfies the research work for med part of the Master’s Degree programme.

MASTER’S/Ph.D. DEGREE PROGRAMME

Below are the requirements for the Master’s degree admission.

  • Candidates in possession of first-class honours from a University that is recognized stand a chance to be admitted into the Master’s/Ph.D. programme in his/her discipline. (see Postgraduate Regulation for details)
  • A candidate that has a Master’s degree from a University that is recognized with at least a GPA of 3.50 on 5-point scale or 3.00 on 4-point scale that wishes to do Ph.D degree in areas that are related area or department shall qualify for the Master’s/Ph.D. Any candidates that are not qualified for Ph.D admission on account of low GPA is still not qualified for admission into Master’s/Ph.D. programme.
  • For all the Faculties and Departments where the possession of Master’s degree with 4.00 points GPA on 5-point scale and above is the available condition for Ph.D admission, all the applicants with a Master’s degree GPA of 3.50 and above, but not up to 4.00 are eligible to apply for Master’s/Ph.D admission. On completing the Master’s degree coursework specified by the Department, the candidate would now be qualified for a firm Ph.D registration as long as he or she acquires the GPA of 4.00 in the Master’s courses.

NOTE: candidates that are admitted into Master’s/Ph.D programme are given two options: the First one is, he could complete the Master’s degree programme and proceed with the Doctoral programme by applying without completing a new application form if he/she passes the Master degree with at least 3.50 or 4.0 GPA on a 5-point scale depending on the Department/Faculty. Secondly, the general performance of the students in the course work could be evaluated after the first two semesters of being on the Masters’/Ph.D programme. If the student decides to makes a GPA of 3.50 or 4.0 and the above in the coursework (as applicable to the Department/Faculty), the Senate on the recommendations of Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Studies Committees and the Board of the School will approve that the candidate should proceed to Ph.D programme without having  fully finish their Master’s degree programme.

SANDWICH POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

  • Ed. Sandwich programmes of the Faculty of Education is offering the following Departments: Adult Education; Arts Education; Science Education; Human Kinetics and Health Education (Health Education, Physical Education & Recreation options); Social Science Education; and Vocational Teacher Education.
  • Ed. Sandwich programme – Faculty of Education
  • MLS degree programme is now available in the Department of Library & Information Science.
  • Sandwich Postgraduate Diploma is offering the Institute of Education (PGDE), Vocational Teacher Education (PGDTE) and Library & Information Science (PGDL).

Note: all the Candidates are expected to read through the current Postgraduate Regulation of the University of Nigeria for the proper guidance on the Entry Requirements and other conditions for Postgraduate admissions in the University.

Duration of UNN Postgraduate Programmes

Postgraduate Diploma

  • Postgraduate Diploma (Regular) – Two semesters
  • Postgraduate Diploma (Sandwich) – Three Long Vacations

Master’s degree (Regular)

  • In possession of at least 3 semesters for a full-time and 5 semesters for the part-time in all the departments/faculties aside that of the departments/faculties stated below.
  • Possess at least a minimum of 4 semesters for full-time and 6 semester for part-time for the following departments/faculties: Sociology, Psychology, public administration and Local Government (PALG), Agriculture, veterinary medicine, education and business administration.

M.Ed. (Sandwich) – three long vacations.

Ph.D. degree Programme – a minimum of six semester for full time and eight semesters for part-time in all the Faculties aside that of Agriculture which have at least minimum of four semesters for full time and six semesters for part-time. The PhD programme is expected not to run as a Sandwich programme.

All the Candidates are expected to complete their programmes at the minimum duration, but should not cross the maximum duration (See Postgraduate Regulations).

How to Apply

The form for the application can be acquired online on the payment of a non-refundable fee of N26,700.00 (Twenty-six, seven hundred nairas only) that is payable to “the University of Nigeria Postgraduate Application Fees Account, at any of the banks that is in the country making use of the Remita platform. Below are the following steps for the application:

  • First, you need to login to the UNN Portal using this URL unnportal.unn.edu.ng
  • Then locate Postgraduate Students
  • Choose PG form for 2020/2021
  • Enter your mobile number
  • Fill in all the basic details
  • Generate an invoice using the RRR
  • After that make the payment using the online channel or at the bank.
  • Then go back to the online form
  • Fill up the PG online Application form
  • Upload all the necessary credentials in PDF
  • Then complete the referee form. (enter your emails correctly)
  • Check for the complete details
  • And then submit the form.

Candidates are expected to note that with the exception of the transcript, you are not required to submit the hard copies of the application materials to the school of postgraduate studies.

Referee reports: when completing the referee’s application form, the candidates is expected to supply the email addresses of their referees via a link that would be sent to the referees with a request ti complete the report form in respect of the candidate and then submit it online.

TRANSCRIPTS

All the candidates are expected to download the transcripts request forms (D2) also provided online, and then submit their former universities/institutions in other to forward their academic transcript (s) to “The Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka” to reach him/her later than 15th April, 2020. Candidates whose transcripts are not received on or before the deadline by the school shall not have their application forms processed.

Additional information: all the required information would be completed online except the transcript. Copies of quality certificates/statement of result and NYSC discharge certificate (Exemption or Exclusion certificates) are required to be attached. Note that to Whom it may concern is expected to not be accepted in Lieu if the certificates specified above.

REGISTRATION – For the regular/Sandwich programmes, Postgraduate diploma Master’s and doctorate degree programme, candidates are expected to register their postgraduate courses within about four weeks from the commencement of the session. All the admitted candidates for the sandwich programmes are required to register nothing later than two weeks from the commencement of the sandwich session.

Students and the general public are to be informed that the postgraduate admission computer Based screening Test earlier scheduled to hold on the 17th and 18th July, 2020 has been further postponed till further notice.

Closing Date: Application commences starting from Monday, 9th March 2020 and closes on Wednesday, 22nd April, 2020 till further notice.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL APPLICANTS

  • All the applicants are expected to undergo the computer-based Postgraduate admission screening.
  • Check out information on the screening processes via the UNN website via unn.edu.ng starting from on the 1st of July, 2020, for your further necessary action.
  • The Postgraduate admission screening: 17th and 18th July, 2020.
  • NOTE: for Ph.D degree programme, a candidate is expected to have published at least an article from his/her Ph.D thesis in a journal certified by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as a condition for the graduation.
  • Plagiarism test is expected to run on Master’s project report and Ph.D Thesis before they can be approved.
