UNIOSUN 2020/2021 Notice to 300 Level Students

The University will like to inform the general public that the management of Osun State University is committed to the wellbeing and safety of the students. Because of this, the University has been postponing one of the core course (Mapping Techniques) that every 300 level students of the Department of Geological Sciences must do. During this course, the students will have to embark on a trip to a special place where they will be exposed to the core practical work, and one of the places that most universities that offer geology as a course visit at least once a year is Igarra in Edo state.

Recently, the university management met with the security team and the Department of Geology to proceed with the course and ensure the students are safe. The meeting advised that only the team leader will have access to a utility phone available for safety purposes.

We all understand that it is very easy for students to travel and share their details with strangers, which can be a source of information for kidnappers and can be used against them.

As we speak, over four Universities offering Geology are currently in Igarra carrying out fieldwork exercises as part of the requirement of the senate of the University, NUC, and Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) before graduation.

The University Management thereby addressed the students to please work as a team to embark on the trip to carry out the fieldwork and come back safely.

We will also like to place it on record that Igarra is a special place that consists of several rocks that you can hardly find and 70 to 80% of the Universities that offer Geology in Nigeria visit Igarra at least once a year to study.

Finally, due to the agitations of the students and the reality of the insecurity in the nation, the management of the University has canceled the trip and approved that the students go ahead to do the theory and find a safer place to do the fieldwork.
