About the UNILORIN Postgraduate Admission Form for 2020/2021 Academic Session

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is now inviting applications from all suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Postgraduate programmes (Ph.D. Degree, M.Phil /Ph.D. Degree, Master Degree, and Postgraduate Diploma) for the academic session of 2020/2021.

Latest Update: Students and the general public are to be informed that the university of Ilorin management has approved the Portal be re-opened from Monday, 23rd November to Sunday, 13th December 2020 for:

  • Application for admission into the postgraduates Academic programmes for 2020/2021.

All the prospective candidates for admission that have not yet applied are enjoined to take advantage of this golden opportunity.

Applicants for admission are required to:

  • Go through the instruction on the advertisement of Postgraduate programmes carefully and then complete the form for the application on or before Sunday, 13th December 2020.
  • Present all the necessary documents just as contained in the instruction stated below to the Postgraduate school before on Monday 21st December 2020, and
  • The academic transcript is to be addressed and sent to the head of the department where admission is being sought not later than Thursday, 24th December 2020.

Students are expected to note that this opportunity would not be extended after 13th December 2020.

UNILORIN Postgraduate Programmes, Duration & General Information

Ph.D. Degree Programmes

  • These programmes are available to holders of M.A; M.Ed.; M.Eng.; M.Sc.; LL.M; M.Comm.H.; and M.P.H degrees, with a minimum of 60% or cumulative Grade Point Average score in their Master degree programmes. A Ph.D. degree programme is scheduled to hold for a period of 36 calendar months and a maximum period of 48 calendar months for full-time candidates OR at least a period of 48 calendar months and a maximum period of 60 calendar months for all the part-time candidates. All the Courses that are relevant would be taken for the Ph.D. studies where prescribed and a Thesis is needed when the Ph.D. programme ends.

M.Phil /Ph.D. Degree Programmes

  • Interested Candidates that scored between 55.00 and 59.99 percent Cumulative Grade Point Average can apply for admission into the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil/Ph.D.) degree programme. The M.Phil/Ph.D. degree programme is available only to candidates full-time. the programmes is scheduled to run for a minimum period of 12 calendar months and a maximum period of 24 calendar months and a dissertation is produced after the research work. all the Candidates in this category are eligible for conversion to Ph.D. candidature, following a progress assessment report that is made by a Panel of Examiners at the end of the first session of registration. To meet the requirement for conversion for the Ph.D. program, candidates are required to score not less than 60% (aggregate) at the end of the first session.

Master Degree Programmes

  • A.; M.Ed.; M.Eng.; M.Sc.; M.Com.H., LL.M, and M.P.H. degrees have been scheduled to hold for a minimum period of 24 calendar months and a maximum period of 36 calendar months for full-time candidates OR a minimum period of 36 calendar months and a maximum period of 48 calendar months for all the part-time candidates. All Master Degree Programmes are by course work. This is in addition to a research report at the end of which a dissertation will be produced

Postgraduate Diploma Degree Programmes

  • Postgraduate Diploma degrees are available to candidates that are in possession of Third class (honours) degree.

General information

  • The Postgraduate session for the Postgraduate programmes happens to be 12 calendar months, starting from the on 2nd October and ending on the 30th September of the following year. The 12 calendar months would commence automatically from the date of first registration.
  • Applicants are expected to note that, programmes automatically lapse at the expiration of the maximum duration for each programme. However, candidates are expected to apply for an extension of not more than 12 months, in the first instance, subject to a maximum of two such extensions.

UNILORIN Postgraduate Admission Specific Requirements

  1. the Applicants for the postgraduate diploma in computer science are expected to meet the following:
    • Are expected to possess a minimum of any of the following disciplines from a university that is recognized. Sciences, Engineering or the Humanities.
    • Students are expected to possess HND in Computer Science or Engineering from a polytechnic with a minimum of lower credit and.
    • Students are expected to possess HND in any other discipline that is different from those in (ii) but sciences or social sciences with a minimum of lower credit from an institution that is recognized polytechnic or equivalent institution, with at least one-year cognate experience.
  2. interested applicants for Postgraduate Diploma in statistics is expected to satisfy one of the following:
    • A minimum of an Honours degree from a university in any of the science and social science disciplines:
    • HND in statistics from a polytechnic that possesses a minimum lower credit.

3. The M.A. Peace and Security Studies is OPEN ONLY to participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) of the Institute of Security Studies, Abuja.

4.The M.A. Peace and Strategic Studies is available ONLY to participant in the Executive Management Course (EMC) of the Nigerian Army School of Education (NASE), Ilorin or any other equivalent programme approved by NASE.

  1. The M.Sc. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is available ONLY to interested participants of the Natural Water Institute, Kaduna.

Admission Eligibility

  1. All the Certificates would be made available when purchasing the application form. The National Youth Service Corp Discharge Certificate OR Exemption Certificate is to be presented on or before September 30th, 2020.
  2. Interested Candidates are required to submit their application forms online along with scanned copies of their credentials.
  3. Supporting documents in (i) above and the hard copy of the application form is to be sent to the Secretary, Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria between Monday, 1st June 2020 and Friday 10th, July 2020, while the submission of Transcripts of Academic Records should be to the Head of Department where admission would be sought. The Postgraduate School will not be held responsible for any misdirected transcript, please.
  4. All Interested candidates are expected to have 5 O/L Credit passes, of which English Language and Mathematics must be included.
  5. Applicants that are for the Master degree programmes and are graduates of the University of Ilorin and other recognized universities are expected to have a minimum of Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) and must apply for programmes in which they have their first degrees. However, applicants that are with Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) and those with higher classes of degrees seeking admissions into programmes outside those in which they have their first degrees may be offered the admission, provided they satisfy Senate in a qualifying examination to be conducted. The minimum class of Degree for all the academic programme applicants is Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division), regardless of the institution where the Bachelor’s degree is Acquired. ALL the interested candidates shall apply early for their official Bachelor’s degree transcript to be sent to the Head of Department where the admission would be sought, before the date it expires in the stated deadline in (i) above.
  6. Interested Applicants that are for the Ph.D. degree programme are expected to have obtained a relevant Master degree from this or other University that is recognized, with an average weighted score of at least 60%. Short-listed candidates would be expected to satisfy the Postgraduate School in the qualifying interviews and assessments by the relevant Department. Applicants are, therefore, advised to interact with the department to which they applied in other to ascertain the date of the interview for the Ph.D. degree programme. Regardless of the Institution where the Master’s degree was obtained, interested candidates are expected to apply early for the official copy of their academic transcripts to be sent to the Head of the Department where the admission is being sought for the purpose of this admission and before the deadline expires.
  7. All the Higher Degree candidates that attended foreign Universities, where the English language is not the medium of instruction, are expected to submit to the Postgraduate School, evidence of their proficiency in the English Language, e.g. TOEFL or IELTS scores obtained within the validity period of such certifications.
  8. Applicants that are for the Postgraduate Diplomas and Master degree Programmes would be subjected to a written assessment (qualifying examination), irrespective of the class of degree they have acquired, except applicants from the University of Ilorin with a First Class and Second Class, Upper Division (Honours).
  9. International applicants (Applicants who are domiciled outside Nigeria, and non-Nigerians, applying from outside the country) shall be exempted from the qualifying examination. However, International applicants applying from outside the country for the Doctor of Philosophy programmes shall be requested in other to submit a proposal of not more than 5 pages, giving details of what research they intend to carry out.   10. Applicants that are applying for any of the Full-time programmes of the University are expected to present a letter of release from their employers at the registration point.

Interested applicants for all the programmes are N25,000.00 only applicants with Nigeria or $200.00 for international applicants.
