United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is committed to involving youth as leaders, innovators, knowledge-holders in the Water Sector. One of the main ways which UNESCO intends to do so is by encouraging youth to become more involved in research, innovation, enterprise, development, and partnerships that address water security issues in Africa. UNESCO is in contact with several international journals concerning publishing the printed and online versions of a special issue that will focus on the importance of Water Security and youth engagement in Africa. The main objectives of this activity include: improving the exposure of the scientific contribution of youth that addresses water-related challenges in Africa, supporting the advancement of water security in Africa with a focus on the experience of youth and young professionals.

This proposed special issue will focus on scientific articles on the general theme of Youth and Water Security in Africa, which will be authored or co-authored by youth and young researchers. The United Nations defines youth as persons between the ages of 15 to 24 years, UNESCO also engages with young water researchers and professionals between the ages of 25 to 35 in its activities. Hence, Researchers from both age groups are encouraged to participate in the UNESCO call for Abstracts Youth and Water Security in Africa. In addition, young researchers and youth are also encouraged to collaborate with experts to prepare extended abstracts in order to facilitate intergenerational cooperation.

About the UNESCO call for Abstracts for their Youth And Water Security in Africa

UNESCO calls on all researchers, particularly young researchers to submit extended abstracts to be considered for publication in an online booklet and eventually, if selected, as an article in the printed and online versions within the context of Africa Water Week. Once extended abstracts are received, UNESCO will negotiate with the publishers and directly inform all selected authors of the required research paper format and other necessary details.

The extended abstracts must be submitted in English or French to the following email address: nairobi.hydrology@unesco.org. However, the selected ones will be published as manuscripts in English. Note that all extended abstracts should be submitted according to the extended abstract themes and guidelines on or before the deadline date scheduled for 30th of July, 2020.

– Extended Abstract Themes

The extended abstracts should be based on the overall theme of Youth and Water Security in Africa, to be authored and/or co-authored by youth and young researchers and address the sub-themes of the call with a focus on the experience of youth and young professionals. The following are some of the sub-themes for the proposed special issue:

  1. Water-related Disasters and Hydrological Changes
  2. Water Education, a Key to Water Security
  3. Addressing Water Scarcity and Water Quality
  4. Groundwater in a Changing Environment
  5. Ecohydrology, Engineering Harmony for a Sustainable World
  6. Water and Human Settlements of the Future

– Extended Abstract Submission Guidelines

Below are the following recommended guidelines or format for submission of the Extended Abstract

  1. Introduction: State the problem or research question that is being addressed, scope, originality, overarching aim or objective of the research paper (150 to 250 words)
  2. Literature Review: theoretical background and discussion (including fundamental concepts, hypothesis and/or model development-if any, findings of the recent studies, etc.) (250 to 500 words)
  3. Methodology: Highlighting how the research was conducted, data collection and analysis methods utilized in this study (100 to 200 words)
  4. Findings and Conclusion: The findings include the presentation of data and outcomes of research and conclusion includes analysis of the relevance of results (100-250 words)
  5. References (15 to 30 references)
  6. Disclosures: Acknowledgements, funding sources and possible conflicts of interests should be declared
  7. APPENDICES
  8. Tables and graphs can be submitted as an attached image or document which should be in jpeg and pdf format. Note that it is important to label and provide references (e.g. Table 1, Figure 1, etc.) in the abstract where possible.
  9. Keywords (three-eight key terms) and Abbreviations should be defined.
  10. Extended Abstracts should be submitted in PDF.

The following word limits will apply Title (3-15 words), Body of the Abstract (500-1000 words, single space with no more than 3 pages) (references not included). It should be noted that possibilities will be explored to facilitate the participation of selected youth responding to this UNESCO call for extended abstracts to present their papers in the Africa Water Week.
