The Swedish environmental protection agency – Naturvårdsverket with the UNDP and the UNV has launched the round 2 of the UNDP Young Environmental Journalists Campaign 2020, this year own will be addressing the mining sector in relation to the environmental and human rights impact in resource-rich countries like Kenya, Columbia, Mozambique and Mongolia. About the UNDP Young Environmental Journalists Campaign 2020

The aim of the UNDP Young Environmental Journalists Campaign 2020 is to empower young volunteers from ages 18 to 31 to increase the public awareness on the use and management of mineral resources and to also have a say in making decisions on these mineral resources.

Of all the volunteers, 70 Young Environmental Journalists will be selected, the will work with the joint Swedish EPA – UNDP Environmental Governance Program (EGP). Together, they will come up with motivational stories that will bring about change and build a strong network of Young journalists and defenders of environmental and human rights.

All 70 Young Environmental Journalists will participate in an online training class, the class will include UNITAR course on environmental governance in the mining sector, they will also participate in various webinars with editors and journalists from August to November.

Young Environmental Journalists who present the best stories will have their stories published by the Inter Press Service and many other media outlets across the four countries the program is based on – Kenya, Columbia, Mozambique and Mongolia. Kenya’s Daily Reporter and In-Depth News will also publish the stories, they will also be published and promoted through the UN, UNDP & EGP websites and on the Swedish Environment Protection Agency platform.

Benefits of the Program

After completing the compulsory online classes and attending all online meetings you will be presented with certificates from the UNV, UNDP, and the Swedish EPA. A certificate from the UNITAR will also be issued to all Young Environmental Journalists that completes the online classes and attend all meetings.

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for the UNDP Young Environmental Journalists Campaign, all volunteers must meet up to all the criteria mentioned below.

  • You must be at least 18 years old and not more than 31 years old.
  • You must have an account with the UNV online volunteering platform.
  • You must speak English fluently.
  • You must speak at least one of the local languages in Kenya, Columbia, Mozambique and Mongolia.
  • You must have knowledge of environmental and human rights issues in Kenya, Columbia, Mozambique and Mongolia.

After meeting up to the above criteria you will be eligible to participate in the UNDP Young Environmental Journalists Campaign 2020 regardless of citizenship. You will not be required to travel during the course of the program.
