More About the UEA-Copenhagen Joint PhD Scholarship in Religion and Social Change in Africa 2020

There’s a call for application for original empirical research projects which includes significant fieldwork focusing on religion and social changes. Topics including the role of religious actors and practices, new religion actors and practices, new religious movements, faith-based organizations, Christian, Islamic and African indigenous religions, non-religious movements with possible links to themes like local politics, public discourse, media, globalization citizenship, governance, agriculture and livelihoods are encouraged.

The successful candidate will be offered an arrangement co-supervised by staff at the centre of African studies and the school of international development. The study time will be divided between the universities starting at UEA. Also, the candidates will be enrolled at both institutions with respective opportunities and requirements. Candidates that are successful will be awarded a PhD degree.

Funding Available

The UEA-Copenhagen joint PhD Scholarship in Religion and Social Change in Africa 2020 co-funding award offers a combination of UEA studentship and PhD stipend at UCPH. During the first two years, the student will resource a UEA studentship covering tuition fees, a tax-free maintenance grant (£15, 285pa 20/21) and a research training support grant (£750 per year) which will be paid through UEA.

Eligibility Criteria for the Scholarship

All applicants for the  UEA-Copenhagen joint PhD Scholarship in Religion and Social Change in Africa 2020 have to fulfil the following requirements to be considered eligible:

  • All applications should have a foundation in the fields of African studies, anthropology, political science, Development studies or a closely related disciple.
  • The standard minimum entry requirement is 2:1. Applicants should have a good Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • All applicants must have excellent academic qualifications and a background and a foundation in African studies, anthropology, political science, development studies on a course that is closely related courses
  • Evidence of competence in English may be required and also relevant work experience will be put into good consideration.
