The RESPOND-AFRICA Fellowship 2021-2022 is now open for application for postgraduate study in Medical Statistics/Epidemiology for African students. A partnership between researchers, health policymakers, and other stakeholders from Tanzania, Uganda, and the UK, the NIHR Research Partnership for the Control of Chronic Diseases in Africa (RESPOND-AFRICA) conducts clinical and public health studies on the control of chronic diseases in Africa.

About the RESPOND-AFRICA Fellowship 2021-2022

As part of their capacity development strategy, they are pleased to offer a fellowship opportunity to interested applicants. Funding will be provided by the scheme or two years. For the fellowship, the first year is for the study of an MSc in Medical Statistics or Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

For the second year of the fellowship, it will be an attachment that is based at one of their partner institutions in Uganda or Tanzania working as a statistician or as an epidemiologist to gain on-the-job training in public health, clinical or population-based research in chronic diseases. At present, their focus is control if hypertension, diabetes, and HIV-infection. Their plan is to expand to incorporate mental health in the near future.

Benefits

The benefits of the fellowship are written below:

  • Tuition fees (fully covered), stipend as well as one return airfare to London
  • During the 12-month attachment on a scientist scale at the MRC/UVI/LSHTM Uganda Research Unit or NIMR Tanzania, a competitive salary will be given.

Eligibility Criteria

The following are the criteria that make an interested individual eligible to apply for the fellowship:

  • It is compulsory that candidates are nationals of an African country and they must also be residents in an African country
  • A working experience in Africa as a statistician or epidemiologist of at least one year is required from applicants.
  • For the study in the UK, applicants are required to meet the English Language requirements.
  • There should be interest by the applicant in research on the control of chronic diseases.
  • Applicants who wish to study an online MSc course will be considered provided they can complete their study and attachment within 3 years although preference is for applicants who wish to study the MSc full-time and face-to-face in London.
  • Applications from women, and from Tanzanian and Ugandan nationals would be particularly encouraged.
