About the OpenIDEO COVID-19 Global South Health and Livelihoods Challenge 2020

This challenge for the COVID-19 for low-and middle-income families living in urban south is to represent a confluence of many challenges in one. As stated by the IPI Global observatory, the global south possesses the highest rates of COVID-19 in the entire world, a lack of adequate access to healthcare, and a big emerging middle class that is basically at risk of going into poverty. Statistics coming from the region only compound the gravity of this reality, which includes:

  • Based on the recently published report by the ECLAC United nations, the rate of poverty in Latin American and the Caribbean is expected to increase by 4.4% in 2020, which is about 30 million people who have entered the middle class, moving backward into poverty.
  • A majority of the population in countries like Peru (76%), Brazil (80%), Columbia (74%), south Africa (64.3%) are living in urban areas, and most of them are living in multi-generational households. Most people who are living in close quarters and the Urban density puts older adults and those with underlying medical conditions at greater risk.
  • So many lower- and middle-income cities and community are living in poorly ventilated and substandard buildings, making the spread of disease easier. So many lack access to clean water, regular electricity, and basic sanitation. Often, those who commute for work basically rely on crowded public transportation, where the rate of disease transfer is high.

The nexus of these urgent realities has made them ask: how might they support low- and middle-income families in the global south to help them stay healthy while they maintain a sustainable livelihood during the COVID-19 pandemic?
