MWFAAN Beyond School Community Challenge 2020 is currently inviting applicants from secondary school students in Nigeria. The scholarship is sponsored by the Mandela Washington Fellowship Alumni Association. Beyond School, Community Challenge is an initiative of MWFAAN in collaboration with the United States Mission to develop entrepreneurial mindsets of young people who are between the ages of 13 and 17 in public and private schools across Nigeria.

About The Challenge

The scholarship provides an opportunity for brilliant and outstanding secondary school students to provide solutions to problems around their environment via the creation of community development projects. Through the guidance of mentors and their schools, the students identify challenges and proffer workable entrepreneurial concepts to address the challenge.

The challenge identifies top finalists yearly from the many applications that are received across Nigeria by working together with the federal and states Ministries of Education. The top finalists will be invited to pitch and also exhibit their entrepreneurial ideas at the National Youth Leaders Assembly. The teams who will be crowned winners will be awarded prizes in form of project and educational grants, teacher prizes, and also certificates of recognition for the teams and schools.

The challenge which is a virtual and STEM-based hackathon on solutions to help Nigerian communities to survive the COVID 19 pandemic will have topics from Education, Agriculture, Medicine/Health and wellness, Women, and Girls’ development as case studies.

Benefits

Invitations will be received by ten finalists teams to the final competition pitch of the Beyond School Community Challenge that will take place alongside the Young Leaders Assembly 2019 in Abuja, Nigeria. Three teams will emerge as winners and a cash prize of N1,000,000 will be shared amongst the winners as follows:

  • N300,000 for project idea scaling for the first place winner
  • Second place winner will receive N250,000 for project idea scaling
  • Third place winner will receive N150,000 for project idea scaling
  • Finalists in the 4th-5th position will receive N10,000 Education Grants
  • Top winning teacher advisor will receive a cash prize of N10,000
  • There will be a presentation of certificates to all teams and schools.

Eligibility

To apply for the School Community Challenge Eligibility, interested candidates are expected to meet up with the following:

  • The scholarship is open to teams and not to individuals. A team must be made up of 3 students and 1 student advisor/mentor.
  • Applicants should be currently enrolled in a secondary school in Nigeria.
  • Applicants must be aged 13-17.
  • Past winners of the scholarship are not eligible for this year’s programme.
  • The student advisor should be above 18 years of age and should either be a teaching or a non-teaching staff in the school where the students are enrolled.
  • Interested applicants must have access to a strong and reliable internet connection.
  • Each school is expected to submit one application only, multiple entries will be disqualified.

Application for MWFAAN Beyond School Community Challenge

Applications will be received by Teams through e-forms to promote inclusiveness for both educational institutions and schools.

The applications will be judged within the ambit of social and business solutions for the COVID 19 pandemic.

The top 20 teams will be selected by the review selection committee for extra review. There shall be coordinated phone conversations, live interview through the Zoom app for every team shortlisted for the hackathon in order to ascertain the authenticity of every application process.
