MTN mPulse Hackathon 2020 is currently receiving applications from all interested persons. MTN mPulse is looking forward to enabling young students who are passionate about making a difference to building innovative solutions that are relevant now and beyond in the MTN mPulse Hackathon as the world is settling down into a new normal due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

MTN will provide support to promising solutions in the identified submission categories to enable them to achieve their full potential with expected widespread adoption and social impact.

Focus Areas

The solutions which are to be developed and submitted by applicants are required to fulfill one or more of these categories:

  • Support remote education, homeschooling, and continued learning (e.g. Home-schooling)
  • Ensures the reach of verified and accurate information to the most remote locations
  • Enables delivery of group interaction remotely (Community engagement platforms)
  • Aids efficient distribution of food, products, and services

Prizes

The winner of the mPulse challenge will receive the following

  • As funding support, the sum of one million naira will be given out
  • Cash Vouchers worth 100,000
  • Latest Samsung tablet that worths up to N120, 000
  • Back to school items by mPulse
  • MTN GAP Bootcamp of six weeks

Prizes for first and second runners up:

The first and second runners up will get the following:

  • As funding support, N500,000 will be given out
  • Cash Vouchers worth N50,000
  • The latest Samsung tablet that worths over the sum of N120,000
  • Back to school items to be provided by mPulse
  • MTN GAP Bootcamp of six weeks

Prizes for 4th to 10th positions

The following prizes will be received by the above-named group of people:

  • Latest Samsung tablet that worths over N120,000
  • Back to school items to be provided by mPulse
  • MTN GAP Bootcamp of six weeks

Prizes for 11th to 20th positions

The prizes are:

  • For each person, the sum of N10,000 as cash vouchers
  • Back to school goody bags provided by mPulse

Eligibility Criteria

MTN mPulse requires candidates to meet certain eligibility requirements before applying and they are:

  • Only primary and secondary school students can apply
  • Applicants are required to be residents in Nigeria
  • The solutions are to be submitted either on mobile apps or websites (web apps)
  • A completed Indemnity Form by parent/guardian covering the use of the applicant’s solutions, data, photos, etc. (by MTN Legal Contracting) must be uploaded. https://mpulse.mtnonline.com/home/hackathon#
  • The ideas of the participant are expected to be innovative, original, and should also solve an actual problem.

Judging Criteria

Solutions submitted by candidates will be judged based on the underlisted:

  • Technical Ability – 45%
  • Usefulness – 25%
  • Creativity -30%

How to Appy

  • November 18: Application begins on the Hackathon website
  • December 16: Projects submission suspended
  • December 17: Selection of the top ten finalists
  • December 19: Pitching of solutions by the top ten finalists to the online judges at the 1st virtual MTN mPulse Hackathon. Announcement of winners will be made the same day.

Bootcamp Stage

  • January 16, 2021: Finalists will be enrolled in the 6 weeks virtual MTN GAP Bootcamp
  • March – April 2021: Finished solutions will be deployed online on the mPulse site to enable access by the teeming teen segment.
