About the Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship 2023

The Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) was established with the aim to allow scholars the time to produce the first draft of a completed book, it accomplishes this by awarding a small number of Morland Scholarships annually.

The Scholarships can be accessed by anyone who writes in the English language and was born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa. The Miles Morland Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2023 Morland Writing Scholarships for African writers will open for entries on Saturday 1st July.

Program Details

Last year we received nearly 600 applications. As we enter the eleventh year of the Morland Writing Scholarships, we’re as excited as ever to read new entries and to discover who the 2023 winners will be. Our judges will have the difficult task of selecting just four scholars out of those who apply. The winners will be announced in November.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Level: Post-graduate
  • Fees: International
  • School: Literature, Drama and Creative writing.
  • Course: MA creative writing (Prose fiction) or MA Biography and Creative Non-fiction.
  • Nationality: Any country within Africa
  • Other criteria: Both parents born in Africa. Applicants must submit copies of both parents’ passport of evidence to UEA at the point of acceptance of the scholarship is awarded on this basis.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must submit an excerpt from a piece of work between 2,000-5,000 words, written in the English Language that has been published and offered for sale. The work submitted will be judged on literary merit by a panel of readers and judges set up by the Miles Morland Foundation.
  • Applicants are required to tell in 200-300 words something about themselves and the background. Candidates who reach the shortlist will be asked for further information about themselves and how to propose to write their book.

Scholarship requirements

All applicants are only required to write. They will be asked to submit by email at least 10,000 new words every month until they have finished their book or their scholarship term has ended. If the first draft of the book is completed before the year is up, payments will continue while scholar edits and refines their work.
