– Data Manager, Breeding

  • Location: Ibadan
  • Recruitment Type: 3-year contract
Job Description
  • A highly motivated data manager who has significant experience in working with crop improvement programs is sought after
  • There will be a report by this position to the head of breeding, IITA and there will also be regular review progress with a staff of the Excellence in Breeding Platform.
Position Responsibilities
  • Work alongside IITA plants and the Excellence in Breeding (EiB) platform in the modernization of breeding programmes for enhanced genetic gain, especially with respect to the deployment and adoption of breeding data management systems and digitization tools.
  • Provide help in the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the adoption of software, digitization as well as standardized protocols for IITA, West Africa, and also key national partners.
  • To enable adoption of EBS, coordinate curation of maize and other crops breeding data.
  • For specific user requirements and support, liaise with Biometrics and IT teams.
  • Coordination of the standardization of phenotypic, genotypic, genealogy data, protocols, and relevant metadata.
  • Make a contribution to the development and reporting of relevant performance metrics/KPLS for the adoption of the breeding systems ai IITA together with EiB.
  • Help in the continuous improvement of the adoption of software tools and processes to identify gaps in adoption and work with breeding programs and Excellence in Breeding in order to resolve gaps.
  • Make contributions to improvement plans for individual crops and to institutional arrangements in supporting plant breeding.
  • Performance of other related duties as assigned by the supervisor
Educational Qualifications
  • It is required that the applicants possess M.Sc. in Information Systems, Data Science, Plant Breeding or related quantitative area of science. Ph.D. is preferable.
Core Competencies:
  • Five years’ experience significant for working as part of crop improvement teams in the public or private sector.
  • An experience by the applicant of using and also developing modern informatics tools used for plant breeding.
  • Experience in managing data from high throughput technologies that is used for plant breeding (molecular and phenotyping).
  • Experience of the applicant in the implementation of relevant software solutions
  • Applicants experience with project management
  • Applicants experience in continuous improvement projects
  • Applicants ability to be able to influence colleagues outside of a formal management structure/ in a matrixed Organisation.
  • Applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English. An added advantage will be some knowledge of French.
  • Ability to do good work across disciplines and in a multinational environment
Remuneration

On behalf of CIP, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture seeks Nigerians who are suitable to apply for the position written above at the CIP project location in Jos. The aim of NPSSP is to support potato seed security in Nigeria by building local capacity within the public and private sector to give adequate supply of quality seed amounts of in-demand and also locally adapted varieties that meet the main market segment while giving support to smallholder farmers in maximizing their investments in see via building capacity in on-farm seed quality management, good agricultural practices meant for improving soil health and fertility.

Duties
  • For building interventions for ware products, seed multipliers, farmers, partners, private sector enterprises, conduct capacity building.
  • Coordination of support planning and delivery of field days and training sites which are managed by partners and project.
  • Provision of technical backstopping to private seed and ware producers on seed as well as ware potato production respectively
  • Alongside working partner, coordinate and monitor activities like extension training trainers followed by farmer training, and monitor collection of all event and field data
  • Day to day management will be overseen as well as the implementation of the project activities in close collaboration with Green innovation centers for the agriculture and food sector (GIAE) teams and project partners.
  • Make a contribution to the data collection and present the activities, results, impacts, and outcomes of the project at the professional, donor, and other stakeholders’ meetings
  • Progress report of the field activities which includes maintaining a database of monitoring data and managing as well as analyzing technical and economic data, write briefs and project technical reports should be produced.
  • Document lessons learned as well as best practices on the development of the project, implementation, and oversight activities.
  • Effective work in the project team to develop a collegial, mutually supportive as well as high-performance work atmosphere.
  • To ensure the safety of humans and property, candidates will take responsibility proactively and also implement the project activities in a timely manner in keeping with the budgets allocated.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Country Team Leader or other Senior members of the Organization.
Qualification
  • It is required that candidates possess a Master’s degree in Agronomy, Pathology or related discipline with at least six years hands of practical experience in training/ field on agronomy, pest and pathogen, post-harvest, and related good agricultural practices of Irish potato.
Competencies

It is expected that the ideal candidates have:

  • Excellent skills when it comes to managing partnerships with senior-level officials to farmers
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in relation to supporting seed and aware producers for the production of seed and ware potato respectively
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in relation to supporting seed potato through rapid sed multiplication technologies.
  • Excellent coordination and monitoring skills in large scale agricultural training programs with several partners.
  • Experience when it comes to collecting different kinds of data from all activities
  • Excellent skills in data analysis, synthesis, and report writing skills.
  • Advanced level of MS Office.

Duties
  • Be of assistance in the monthly report of the development and delivery activities

Qualification
