The 38th convocation ceremony of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education took place on Friday 18th December 2020 and the venue was the university auditorium. The number of students who graduated was a total of three thousand, seven hundred, and forty-seven (3, 747) persons.

Out of the number of students who graduated, 205 obtained Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree, 1, 087 Master’s degree, 521 Postgraduate Diplomas, and 1, 934 Bachelor’s degree. The number of students who obtained a first-class degree was Seventy-eight (78).

While speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Ozo- Mekuri Ndimele observed that the convocation marks the end of one’s studentship in the university. He also noted that the graduands worked hard to earn the enviable feat.

They were encouraged by him to become worthy ambassadors and to always be connected to their alma mater since they are part of the distinguished alumni so that they can see what areas they can assist in the development of the university.

The Rivers State Governor Chief (Barrister) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (CON) was also appreciated by him for his commitment in transforming Rivers State in all sectors with good road networks, flyovers, education, housing, health, security and also for improving the fortunes of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.

It was emphasized by Professor Ndimele that the Governor made possible the level of development attained in the university with his support and encouragement. He also added that the grant which was approved and released by the Governor in 2018 is the reason that the institution has become the most sought-after university south of Niger.

The postgraduate school has overtaken others in the region according to him, particularly in areas that the National Universities Commission (NUC) allowed the university to operate because of the grant impact.

The Vice-Chancellor hinted that the university runs an efficient postgraduate school with a conducive learning environment, 21 well-furnished classrooms, and an auditorium in less than four years of its existence, an achievement that older universities have not attained.

He appreciated the state governor for prompt payment of staff salaries, a development which he noticed has motivated and strongly energized the workforce for more productive work. Gratitude was also expressed by the Chief Executive to the Rivers State Honorable Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku for the support they received so far and also to the governing council, staff, students, and benefactors.

Individuals and organizations who instituted various prizes and awards for graduands and other forms of donations were also appreciated by him.

Funding to cater for two new buildings for the Faculty of Technical and Vocational Education and Faculty of Social Sciences, for more classrooms to obtain more space for accommodating the large influx of students for a befitting auditorium for matriculation and convocation ceremonies were also appealed for by him.

Recruitment for more staff was also appealed for by him especially as the university stands to lose accreditation in virtually all programmes when the National Universities Commission (NUC)visits by the first quarter of next year and for the modification of the name of the university from Ignatius Ajuru University of Education to Ignatius Ajuru University.

The following were listed as the humble achievements of Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele: completion of 71 new classrooms/lecture spaces 10 at the new Faculty of Education building, 10 at the new postgraduate classrooms at Wike Centre of Excellence, 6 at the new undergraduate lecture halls at Wike Centre of Excellence, 6 at the new auditorium extension, 2 large halls at the ICT centre, the Seaside Theatre building, 9 large halls at the International Students lecture complex, 6 large halls and 4 studios at the Faculty of Business Studies, 2 halls at the International students’ study centre, 4 large classrooms at Emmanuel Aguma Postgraduate lecture complex, 1 language laboratory at Emmanuel Aguma Postgraduate lecture complex.

The target of the Vice-Chancellor as he mentioned is to build at least 80 lecture halls before his tenure ends. He called on distinguished alumni with the available opportunity and appealed to them to contribute towards the growth of their alma mater by making cash donations or the endowment of chairs and foundations.

The graduands of the institution were also congratulated by Professor Ndimele and they were all wished well. The institution awarded the best graduating student, Miss Faith Chidinma Igbonekwu a sum of one million nairas.
