Everything You Need to Know About Your UNIBEN CGPA

First of all,  What is CGPA? 

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a number calculated from your grades representing your performance in a semester. Your CGPA represents the average of your grades in a semester. The University of Benin (UNIBEN) uses a five (5) point grading system. This means that your final GPA on Uniben is “Over 5”.

GPA simply mean Grade Point Average. That is a measure of a student’s academic achievement at a college or university. It is calculated by dividing the total number of acquired grade points by the total number of courses unit received. CGPA means Cumulative Grade Point Average. The grade may later differ. Why some university makes use of ABCDEF and some use ABCDF. Polytechnic make use of AB and BC in their grading.

Importance of GPA

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a number that indicates how well or how high you score in your courses on average. It is the measure of student performance in all the courses offered. GPA scale of 1.00, 4.00, and 5.00 during your studies shows your grade is high or low. This number is then used to assess your performance to know whether you meet the standard and expectations set by the university. The importance of GPA is:

Class of Grades Under UNIBEN Grading System

If you want to graduate with a very good grade, it is advisable that you build your first year with a good grade because the higher you go the tougher it becomes. This doesn’t mean that you should take another level for granted but rather the already built grade will Inspire and encourage you.

  • First-class division (5.00 – 4.50 CGPA).
  • Second class upper-division (4.49 – 3.50 CGPA).
  • Second class lower division (3.49 – 2.40 CGPA).
  • Third class division (2.39 – 1.50 CGPA).

Note: Pass grade has been abolished in UNIBEN by the change in the grading system.

Every course Carries a fixed number of credit units (CU), Quality point (QP), are derived from multiplying the credit units (CU) for a course by the grade point (GP) earned by the student in that course.

E.g. if in a 3-credit unit course, a student score is 63% which is B with a grade point of 4.00, the quality point of the student in that course is 3*4 =12.

How to Calculate Your CGPA in UNIBEN

1. Check Your Result

UNIBEN Results are usually posted on each department’s notice board.

For example,  if you are a student of Chemical Engineering, your results would be posted on the Chemical engineering notice board.

Results are usually posted at the beginning or middle of the next semester.

In other words,  First semester results would be posted at the beginning or middle of the second semester for a particular session.

Check your results and write them down.

2. Check For the “Credit Load” of your Courses

This can be found in your prospectus.

The Prospectus is usually given to any Uniben student afThis represents the importance of any course.

For example,  a “4 credit load” course is far more important than a “2 credit load” course.

Every course in Uniben has a credit load attached to it.

Credit loads of courses in UNIBEN are 1, 2, 3, and 4.

3. Interprete Your Grades – grade values

Grades are interpreted the following way in  Uniben and in many other Nigerian Universities.

A: 5 points

B: 4 points

C: 3 points

D: 2 points

E: 1 point

F: 0 point

CGPA =  ((Grade value of 1st  course  x Credit load of 1st course) + ( Grade value of 2nd  course  x Credit load of 2nd course)…) / (Credit load of 1st course + credit load of 2nd course…)
