This work is based on the comparison between a Federal vs Private University in Ondo State with the aim of determining which is better. We intend to achieve that by using various conditions to evaluate their differences or similarities.

Our focus state which is Ondo State has three private universities, namely; Achievers University, Owo, Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, and Wesley University. of Science & Technology, Ondo.

Federal and private universities in Nigeria differ in several key aspects:

Federal Universities are funded and operated by the federal government of Nigeria. They receive funding from the federal budget and are generally considered to have more substantial financial resources. On the other hand, Private universities in Nigeria are owned and operated by private individuals, organizations, or religious bodies. They rely on tuition fees, donations, and other sources of private funding.

Tuition Fees:

Tuition fees in federal universities tend to be lower compared to private universities. The government subsidizes education costs for students in federal institutions. Meanwhile, Private universities often have higher tuition fees, which can vary widely depending on the institution. Students are responsible for covering their educational expenses.

Admission Process:

Admission to federal universities in Nigeria is highly competitive and is typically based on standardized entrance examinations such as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the Post-UTME screening. There are also quota systems in place to ensure representation from different states. However, Admission processes in private universities may vary but often include meeting certain academic requirements and paying application fees. They might have more flexible admission criteria compared to federal institutions.

Class Sizes:

Class sizes in federal universities can be larger, leading to potentially less personalized attention from professors. Alternatively, Private universities often have smaller class sizes, which can facilitate more interactive learning and closer interactions with instructors.

Achievers University, Owo ranked 95th in Nigeria and 10644th in the World 2023 overall rankings with an acceptance rate of 39%, founded in 2008.

Elizade University ranked 101st in Nigeria and 10889th in the World 2023 overall rankings with an acceptance rate of 50%, founded in 2012.
The Wesley University of Science and Technology ranked 104th in Nigeria and 11057th in the World 2023 overall rankings.

On the other hand, the private University in Ondo state is attended mostly by the indigenes of the state. That is the Yoruba people majorly. The current school fees for freshers at the Federal University of Technology is N108,000, and this is for all programs while the returning students are required to pay N45,300 per session.

The School Fees of the Private University in Ondo State

Achievers University School fees range from N900,000 to N1,300,000 for new students and N600,000 to N1,100,000 for returning students. The specific fee is based on your course of study and level.

Elizade University‘s school fees range from N800,000 – N900,000 and it provides its students with accommodations.

The tuition Charge at The Wesley University Of Science And Technology ranges from N240,000 – N500,000 depending on the course and level.

Which is More Expensive?

Looking at the result above, the Private Universities in Ondo State are more expensive than the Federal Universities in the state.

Conclusion

In summary, the result shows that the admission requirement for the Federal University in Ondo State is higher than the Private University in Ondo. But The Federal University is cheaper and it is more culturally diversified. It also has a higher NUC ranking than the private University.
