About Data Journalism Workshop for Reporters 2024

The recent Climate Pathways and Just Transition study found that South Africa’s net zero goal is one of the most challenging decarbonization undertakings globally, but that the cost of inaction is also massive.

How will South Africa navigate these challenges? How will local communities be affected by coal both formally and informally? How are just transition policies being implemented and what are the measures of its success? Journalists are key to interrogating these questions and shedding light on their answers.

At this critical juncture, journalists must contextualize complex science and policy into relevant and engaging news stories for their home audiences. In-depth stories on South Africa’s progress will be key to informing the public and holding governments and polluters accountable to their commitments, while centering the communities most impacted by climate inaction.

Program Details

To help meet this need, EJN will build the capacity and data skills of journalists in South Africa so that they can more effectively report on this important issue.

This work builds on  last year’s media workshop held in Johannesburg, at which participants identified a knowledge gap and consequent training need in data journalism. To that end, this workshop will help journalists effectively incorporate scientific, financial, and technical data into their coverage of net zero.

Eligibility

The workshop is open to journalists from South Africa. No prior experience in data journalism is required; the workshop is open to journalists of all abilities interested in improving their coverage of the country’s climate mitigation efforts and limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within a fast-closing window.

Motivated and self-starting journalists interested in covering the topic are invited to apply. We are looking for journalists seeking to develop their data journalism skills incorporate data journalism into their future reporting in the long-term.

We are especially eager to hear from journalists covering business, finance and tech beats, or those closely covering the country’s emission-reduction policies.

We welcome applications from journalists from print, television, online and/or radio, with a demonstrated track record of producing incisive, in-depth stories.

Please note:

  • Selected participants must commit to attending all five days of the workshop from January 29 to February 2.
  • Journalists must have a laptop for use at the workshop.
  • EJN and our partners and donors have the right to edit, publish, broadcast and distribute any stories produced as a result of journalists’ participation in the workshop, once they have been published or broadcast in the original media outlet.
