The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary laboratory which is based at the Munk School of Global Affairs and  Public Policy, University of Toronto, emphasizing a focus on research, development, and high-level strategic policy and legal engagement at the intersection of information and communication technologies, global security and human rights. Basically Citizen Lab Fellowship is considered to be an academic institution which is focused on the advancement of human rights within the framework of the technological sphere, they are committed to addressing inequality and systemic racism and as well as making their own space more representative of the communities they serve. In order to efficiently achieve these goals, they are pleased to announce a fellowship program known as Citizen Lab Fellowship to tackle and address issues related to surveillance, digital security, and race.

About the Citizen Lab Fellowship 2020

Project Scope: The scope of the project and the duration of the program are chosen by the applicants. Below are the proposed projects from which applicants can choose from:

  • 3 months is well suited for developing and Initiative or existing projects. Selected applicants can get a boost needed to complete or bolster an existing project or turn a new idea into a pilot study, proof of concept, beta software release, etc.
  • 6 months is appropriate for more involved projects which the 3-month duration would not be enough to realize.

Project Topic Areas: Projects can have a technical and/or legal and policy focus. Potential project topics could include but are not limited to: Technical, legal, and/or policy Investigations of surveillance technologies (e.g., IMSI catchers, CCTV, drones, facial recognition, bodycams, etc.) in communities of colour and/or deployed during protests. Developing technologies and tactics which enhances privacy (e.g., encryption and anonymity tools, contextualizing these tools for racialized communities).

The Citizen lab fellowship provides support of $4,000 CAD distributed to selected applicants monthly payments:

  • 3 month total: $12,000 CAD
  • 6 month total: $24,000 CAD

Eligibility Criteria

In order to take part in the Citizen Lab Fellowship 2020, certain eligibility criteria are required of the applicants. These eligibility criteria or requirements to be met by the applicants includes the following:

  • Applicant must identify as Black (including Black Africans and people of African heritage from the Caribbean, Latin America and North America)
  • Applications are open to people from a number of several professional backgrounds and disciplines which can include students and junior to mid-career practitioners;

It should be noted that while individuals with unique career paths are encouraged to apply, likely candidates have experience as software developers, information security researchers, systems administrators, computer science and engineering students and researchers, lawyers and law students,  social science students and researchers (e.g., political science, sociology, etc), community organizers, and others.
