The Carnegie/ACLS African Humanities Fellowship Program 2020-2021, is inviting applications from all interested applicants looking forward to applying. Carnegie/ACLS African Humanities Fellowship Program 2020-2021

The fellowship aims to:

  • Enable and encourage the production of new knowledge and new approaches to research.
  • To help toughen the capacity of early career researchers and faculty of African Universities
  • To advance the humanities through the establishment of networks for scholarly communication all through Africa and with Africanists worldwide.

Details of The Fellowship

During 10 annual fellowship competitions (2008-18), the effort of ACLS has contributed to the stipulated growth of a robust humanities community in Africa. More than about 400 scholars who are in their early career were offered research support and over 100 senior scholars at African universities served as peer reviewers and advisers.

As of 2019, a grant was announced by the Carnegie Corporation commemorating the ACLS Centennial for an extension of AHP activities. This grant would be providing support to two new fellowship competitions (2019-20 and 2020-21). This new competition would be for the purpose of postdoctoral fellowships only.

This competition would be the last competition for the ten-year program that is being supported by Carnegie Corporation. So, Apply now.

Selection Criteria

Candidates would be selected based on the following selection criteria. They include:

  • The intrinsic interest and substantive merit of the proposed work
  • How clear the intellectual agenda is
  • The work plan feasibility
  • The achievement record of a postdoctoral scholar and the promise of a PhD candidate
  • The contribution you are likely to make to the scholarship on the continent and around the world.

This program is looking forward to strengthening the humanities scholarship in Africa through the following means.

  • By promoting diversity in terms of gender and historical disadvantage alongside diversities in disciplines, institutions, and regions. The fellowship specifically encourages women to apply.
  • By making sure research opportunities are available to staff at African universities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Carnegie/ACLS African Humanities Fellowship Program, all interested applicants are expected to meet the following eligibility requirement stated below. They include:

  • The award is open to citizens from the sub-Saharan African countries, and are expected to have taken up jobs in a university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania or Uganda.
  • All scholars are expected to be within eight years of receiving the PhD degree.
  • This fellowship specifically encourages women to apply for the award.
