The Association for Research on Civil Society in Africa in Short “AROCSA” PhD Fellowship Program 2020/2021 is now inviting applications from all interested candidates looking forward to applying for the program.

Ph.D. scholars that have defended their research proposal successfully will be offered research grants that will cover the cost of their entire research i.e. data collection, fieldwork, data processing, and the printing of their final dissertations.

About the AROCSA PhD Fellowship Program 2020/2021

This grant is aimed at encouraging the dissemination and production of Knowledge by African scholars in nonprofit management philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, civil society, and voluntary action studies going in line with the mission of AROCSA’s to promote and advance a community of excellence in research and practice on civil society in African development service.

Applicants that are successful would be required to provide papers on the research at AROCSA’s next annual conference scheduled to take place in August 2021 where they would get inducted with the Association for research on civil society in Africa (AROCSA) fellows. Their completed theses will be hosted on the website of AROCSA as an open-source document that will further benefit other researchers and the public.

Applicants that are successful with the program will be offered an awarded grant of about US$3,500.

Eligibility

Candidates that want to be a part of the programme are expected to meet the eligibility criteria stated below:

  • The award is available to African scholars who are currently registered as full-time Ph.D. students with an African university.
  • The Theses of the applicant is expected to be focused on nonprofit management, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, civil society, and voluntary action studies.
  • The applicants are expected to have defended their proposal for research before the time of the application in other to be considered as an eligible candidate.

Criteria for Selection

Grants would be award to candidates based on merits. Applicants would be selected based on the following selection criteria:

  • Impact of the research proposed and the potential quality
  • Alignment with the thematic research areas if philanthropy, nonprofit management, civil society, social entrepreneurship, and voluntary studies.

Application

All the applicants are expected to apply for the Ph.D. workshop through the electronic application on the website of the Association for research on civil society in Africa (AROCSA). The application is expected to include the following:

  • Evidence that you are registered with an African University
  • A copy of the research that has been approved

Proposal: the applicants would be required to make provision for copies of their defended research proposals and the aim of the study must fall within any of nonprofit management, civil society, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and voluntary action studies.

  • You are expected to provide a letter of motivation from the applicant
  • Provide a letter of support from the supervisor: making use of the letterhead of the institution, the letter is expected to contain the approval of the supervisor, confirm that the students have defended their research proposal successfully, and it includes an assurance of the continuous support for the research duration. The letter should also contain the contact of the supervisor.
  • Budget: applicants are expected to provide a detailed breakdown of finances required for the completion of their research, detailing how the funds will be used and allocated from the collection of data to the conclusion of the thesis, clearly stating how the expenses is linked to the phases of the research.
  • Candidates are expected to compile all the listed items above into one PDF document before submitting it. All the original documents that were created for the submission should be presented as a doubled spaced, 12pt font with one-inch margins.
